Bio / Career Overview - Designer Guys
by Mikal Saint George

If you have followed the Designer Guys on their hit television show, you know their approach to decorating is more about helping you find your personal style and less about imposing their personal taste. Experienced and charismatic decorators, Chris Hyndman and Steven Sabados provide their insight into design dilemmas and help people in their pursuit of a beautiful living space.

Steven Sabados, who was born in Niagara Falls, and Chris Hyndman, a native of Saint Philip’s, New Foundland, joined forces in 1992 when they formed The Sabados Group. Initially the company focused in event planning, product launches and set design. But Steven and Chris soon expanded into the field of interior decorating with do-it-yourself appearances on a variety of home and decorating shows in Canada. Steven and Chris then received a call to audition for Discovery Homes’ Designer Guys, which ultimately changed their lives. With the calm and suave Steven and the excitable and quick-witted Chris, the duo sealed the deal.

Since their debut in 2001, the pair have become household names. Steven and Chris have even caught the attention of Oprah Winfrey when she featured them on her show in 2002. With three successful seasons of Designer Guys under their belts, Steven and Chris began filming another interior design show, Design Rivals, in 2003. On Design Rivals, the pair explore independent and sometimes conflicting deign solutions for a client. But at the end of the show, it’s that competitive spirit that yields the best solution for their client. The duo is taking the world by storm with both shows airing in the USA on Discovery Home and broadcast in 17 countries worldwide.

Published in 2002, Steven and Chris wrote their first book entitled, Designer Guys: Finding Your Personal Style, encouraging people to be comfortable with who they are and then creating a home décor that reflects their own style. The book also provided tips on everything from designing small spaces, kids’ rooms and tackling major renovations. Shortly after the launch of their book, Steven and Chris opened Decadence By Design, a home style boutique in St. Johns New Foundland offering one-of-a-kind objet and interior design resources representing the duo’s singular approach to home décor and personal style.

Long known for personal fashion flair of their own, it was only a matter of time before Steven and Chris were tapped to offer their expertise on their latest television endeavor, SO CHIC. A fun-filled journey into fashion, beauty and self –esteem, SO CHIC follows the adventures of head-to-toe makeovers for viewers with an upcoming special occasion that requires a red carpet entrance. SO CHIC is currently airing on Canada’s LIFE Network (with a US and international broadcast deal pending).

Often considered pioneers in the TV genre of home design shows, Steven and Chris bring their bright, funny, creative talent (and good looks) to each endeavor. One small secret to their success is the pair allowing fans and clients to realize they too encountered décor faux pas early in their careers. “We want viewers to know that they can do what we do because we have been down that road,” says Steve. “We are showing people what is possible, not what’s not!” adds Chris.
