Bio - Steven Sabatos
by Mikal Saint George
Steven Sabados is not only a designer but a self professed
free spirit as much in tune with a client’s state of
mind as he is with their floor-plan. A proponent of design
greats such as Philippe Starcke and Stephen Mintoff, Steven
loves to reinvent the wheel with each new project. “Starck
really set the benchmark for modern designers with his ability
to combine classic luxury with ultra contemporary forms.” He
recalls. “I love taking the mundane and transforming
it to a showpiece.”
Born in Canada surrounded by the breathtaking natural drama
of Niagara Falls, the lush colors and rich textures of the
great outdoors have often served as inspiration for Steven’s
design passion. He recalls his childhood home being defined
by his parents love of the arts and design and influenced by
his grandmother, a longtime art patron with a flair for oil
painting – a talent she passed on to the young Sabados.
Steven eventually relocated to London, Ontario earning a
degree in Fine Art from Fanshawe College before moving to Toronto
as Visual Presentation Supervisor for Eaton's at the flagship
Eaton Center. He later became the Display Director for retail
giant, Roots Canada, where he brought an artisan’s eye
to the structured world of retail and was responsible for designing
both window and in-store displays for 38 Roots’ stores.
Wanting to break free of the corporate reigns that controlled
his artistic vision, Steven formed The Sabados Group Inc.,
a company specializing in event planning, new product launches
and interior design. Along with partner Christopher Hydman
he quickly steered the company to national recognition launching
the hit television series, Designer Guys. An immediate
sensation, the duo balanced their thriving design company with
the fast-paced world of television for three successful seasons.
Considered by many to be an indispensible source of design
inspiration and how-to guide, the series continues to air on
Discovery Homes’ Network in the US and in more than 30
countries worldwide.
Steven believes the most important design element of any
décor is the person who will be living in it. “Making
a personal connection with a client is key,” says Steven. “It
is never about me forcing my own style on a client.” He
always encourages clients to express themselves, forgetting
about fitting in with the neighbors or playing it safe. Instead,
he guides homeowners using their own ideas and personal style
as a roadmap. This one-on-one approach allows clients to achieve
a singular look that is an extension of their personality.
Steven continues to hone his skills with oil painting, his
self-described therapy, while constantly stretching the definition
of fine art with his culinary ability. Cooking is yet another
passion that Steven finds to be a “great escape” after
a hectic day. “I never eat out, dinner is always at my
house,” he proudly states. And what a house it is!
