Such a move allows the collection to chart new ways of writing and thinking about song and dance in Hindi cinema. In turn, how these elements define this cinema both contemporaneously and retrospectively. It’s a look at the underpinnings of the different discourses that underlie two of our time’s biggest and most popular film industries. The only common denominator in these two industries is that they are both very large and fast-growing and increasing in the sophistication of the films they produce. Not surprisingly, such a question and intervention comes precisely at a time when many scholars note the passing of song and dance through a westernized film logic bent on eliminating these hidden ‘irrationalities’ of Hindi.
